Green water is a people problem, not a fish problem. Algae isn't the enemy either... it's a signal. When it takes over, something is out of balance: too many nutrients, too much light, or not enough biological filtration. Fix the balance and the water clears. Here are the 10 steps, in order.
Step 1: Reduce Feeding
Every pellet your fish don't eat becomes algae food. So does the waste from the pellets they do eat. Excess nutrients from fish waste and uneaten food are the number one fuel for green water.
The fix is simple: feed less. Try limiting feedings to once or twice a week. It feels stingy, but the average pond has plenty of natural food, and your fish get exercise foraging for it. Less food in means less algae fuel in. That's the whole equation.
Step 2: Thin Out Your Fish
More fish means more waste, and more waste means more nutrients for algae. A good rule of thumb: one goldfish for every 50 gallons, or one koi for every 150-200 gallons.
Over that? You have options. Rehome a few fish, donate them to a local pet store, or if you can't bear to part with anyone, upgrade your filtration to handle the load. Overstocking is one of the most common reasons a pond can't stay clear no matter what else you do.
Step 3: Clean Out Debris
Leaves, mulch, and other organic matter decompose into exactly the nutrients algae wants. Left long enough, they become sludge on the bottom, releasing nutrients into the water as they break down.
Scoop surface debris with a net before it sinks. For what already made it to the bottom, a pond vacuum does the job.
Step 4: Improve Circulation
Stagnant water is where problems start. Good circulation distributes oxygen throughout the pond, and your beneficial bacteria (more on them in Step 7) depend on adequate oxygen and consistent flow to do their work.
One simple move: place your pump on the opposite side of the pond from the waterfall it feeds. That pulls water across the whole pond instead of short-circuiting one corner. Bigger or oddly shaped ponds may need a second pump or an aeration device, especially in hot summer weather when oxygen drops.
Step 5: Add Plants
Plants are your natural nutrient sponge. They absorb the nutrients algae would otherwise feed on, and they shade the water, cutting the sunlight that powers algae growth.
- Submerged plants like anacharis and hornwort absorb nutrients directly from the water and add oxygen.
- Floating plants shade the surface and starve algae of light.
- Water lilies spread their pads for shade and pull nutrients while they're at it.

Step 6: Upgrade Your Filter
For the clearest water, run a two-step system: a pre-filter near the pump to catch larger debris, and a biological filter (like the Matala BioSteps) installed outside the pond. The biological filter is the important half. Its media is concentrated, protected surface area where beneficial bacteria colonize, and more surface area means stronger biological filtration.
Size the filter to your pond. Too small and it can't keep up. Too big and you're paying for energy you don't need.
Step 7: Seed Your Pond with Beneficial Bacteria
This is the step that makes the other nine stick. Beneficial bacteria are the biological engine of your pond, and they work upstream of the algae problem: they consume the same nutrients algae feeds on, starving it out before it blooms. Algaecides and clarifiers treat the symptom. Bacteria treat the cause.
They also run the nitrogen cycle that keeps your fish safe. Fish constantly produce ammonia, which is highly toxic. One group of bacteria converts ammonia to nitrite, another converts nitrite to nitrate, which is far less toxic and gets absorbed by your plants. On top of that, they colonize and digest bottom sludge so it shrinks instead of piling up.
How to dose:
- Spring start-up: begin once water temperatures hold consistently above 50-55°F. Go slightly heavier after a clean-out or restart.
- Active season: dose weekly, spring through early fall. Increase if fish load is heavy or algae is growing.
- After big events: add an extra dose after full clean-outs, aggressive filter cleaning, large water changes, or heavy rain runoff. All of those knock colonies back.
- Below 50°F: routine dosing is usually unnecessary. The bacteria are still there, just slowed down.

Step 8: Prevent Stirring
Fish love to root around the bottom, and every pass stirs sediment into the water column. That's a common cause of cloudy, murky water, and the good news is it's often temporary: the particles settle or your filtration catches them.
To stop it at the source, add a layer of fist-sized stones on the bottom and shelves of your pond. The stones anchor plants, give fish hiding spots, and keep noses out of the dirt. A bottom drain or an added water feature helps too, by keeping water moving instead of letting sediment sit.
Step 9: Prevent Run-Off
Rain washing off your lawn carries fertilizer, chemicals, and organic debris straight into the pond. That's a nutrient delivery service for algae, and heavy runoff can also knock back your bacteria colonies.
Raise the edges of the pond so runoff flows around it, not into it. A small berm or retaining wall around the perimeter does the trick. And skip fertilizers and pesticides near the water... keep grass clippings out too.
Step 10: Regular Water Changes
Swap out 10-20% of your pond water every two weeks, and keep it modest. Small, regular changes dilute excess nutrients and nitrate. Large ones do more harm than good: they knock back your bacteria colonies, and during a green water bloom, fresh water just refuels the algae.
If you refill with city water, dechlorinator is essential. Chlorine is harmful to fish, plants, and the bacteria you've been building up.
If All Else Fails: UV Clarification
Still green after all ten steps? Time for a UV clarifier.
Here's what it actually does: green water is microscopic, free-floating algae suspended in the water column. You can't net it out. Know its limits, though. UV only treats what floats in the water. It clears green water but does nothing for string algae stuck on your rocks and waterfall. And it doesn't remove nutrients... it treats the bloom, not the cause. Keep the bacteria and plants working upstream.

What Not to Do
Green water shows up and the panic sets in. Don't panic. Don't dump chemicals in. And specifically:
- Don't drain and refill. It feels productive, but it wipes out your beneficial bacteria, and the fresh water just refuels the algae. You end up further behind than when you started.
- Don't dump in algaecide. A sudden algae die-off can crash your oxygen levels, and now you have a fish emergency instead of a clarity problem.
- Don't shut off your pump or filter. Your bacteria need circulation and oxygen around the clock.
- Don't add blue or black dye if you want to grow plants and see your fish. Dye blocks the light your plants need to photosynthesize, and it hides the fish you built the pond to watch.
- Don't expect overnight results. Clarity is maintained by stable, supported biology, not won by reacting.
Work the ten steps, keep the bacteria fed, and let the balance do what balance does. Green water is a people problem... which means people can fix it.
