Algae is the number one question we get. By phone, by email, at the counter. So here are the real answers, the same ones we give our own customers... starting with the one thing most pond owners have backwards.
What causes algae in my pond?
Algae shows up when nutrients meet sunlight. That's the whole formula. The nutrients come from fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying debris like leaves. Add weak biological filtration, poor circulation, or too many fish, and algae has everything it needs.
The two most common culprits we see: too many fish being fed too often, and leaves that never got netted out in the fall.
What's the difference between beneficial bacteria and algaecide?
This is the one everybody mixes up, so let's settle it.
Algaecide kills the algae you can see today. The nutrients that grew it are still in the water, so new algae grows right back. You're treating the symptom.
Beneficial bacteria work upstream. They're living organisms that eat the same nutrients the algae is after, break down fish waste and sludge, and convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into far less harmful nitrate. Starve the algae of fuel and it can't take over. That's treating the cause.
Products like Hydro-Bugs are beneficial bacteria, not algaecide. They don't kill anything. They out-eat it.
My pond looks like pea soup. How do I fix green water?
Green water is microscopic, free-floating algae suspended in the water column. You can't net it out, and it can turn a pond green in a day or two. It's most common in spring, when nutrients are high and your biological filtration hasn't woken up from winter yet. It's not harmful to your fish. Don't panic. Don't dump chemicals in.
- Dose beneficial bacteria weekly. Hydro-Bugs or Green-be-Gone rebuild your biological filtration and outcompete the algae for nutrients. This is the foundation of long-term clarity.
- Add a UV clarifier. A properly sized UV unit clumps suspended algae so your filter can catch it. It's the most reliable mechanical tool for green water. And check the bulb's age... old bulbs can glow and still be too weak to do the job.
- Cut the nutrient supply. Feed less, remove debris, don't overstock.
- Add plant competition. Floating plants, submerged plants, and lilies absorb nutrients and shade the water.
- Be patient. Hold the routine steady and let biology do its work.
How do I get rid of string algae?
String algae (also called filamentous or hair algae) forms long strands that anchor to rocks, waterfalls, and stream beds. Because it clings to surfaces, your filter can't remove it, and a UV clarifier won't touch it either... UV only treats what floats in the water. String algae needs a combination approach, not a single treatment:
- Pull it out by hand first. Twirl it around a stick or pond brush. This isn't admitting defeat. It's removing biomass before it dies, decays, and feeds the next round.
- Reduce nutrients. Cut back feeding and clear out organic debris.
- Dose beneficial bacteria. Strong biological activity limits regrowth.
- Add plants. Submerged and floating plants are especially effective competition.
- For stubborn cases, a fish-safe algaecide like Green PondFx can knock back heavy growth. Read the label, and make sure the water is well aerated with a pump or aerator when you apply it.
How long until beneficial bacteria get it under control?
Dose weekly and give it time. Expect anywhere from 8 to 20 weeks depending on how bad the algae is, the nutrient load, pH, rainfall, temperature, and cloudy days. Bacteria are living organisms, so conditions matter: they get going once water is consistently above 50 to 55°F and hit full speed between 60 and 75°F.
And here's the part people miss: don't stop when the water clears. Weekly dosing through the active season, spring into early fall, is what keeps it clear. Add an extra dose after clean-outs, aggressive filter cleaning, large water changes, or heavy rain runoff... those all knock your colonies back.
Do I need to get rid of all the algae?
No. Some algae is a normal, necessary part of a healthy pond. The goal is green, fuzzy sides and bottom with water clear enough to see all the way down. That's a balanced pond, not a dirty one.
To get there, cover about 40 to 60 percent of your surface with plants like water lilies, hyacinths, and lettuce, and keep oxygenating plants like anacharis or hornwort down below. A balanced pond with the right amount of fish and plants should stay clear of green water 10 to 11 months of the year with no special care.
How do I control algae on my waterfall?
Mossy or stringy growth on a waterfall responds well to Oxy-Pond Stream and Waterfall Cleaner. Fast acting, fish safe, and we use it on our own display ponds.
Will snails eat my algae problem?
They'll eat some algae and sludge, but they won't solve an algae problem on their own. Snails also eat your plants, multiply fast, and can clog pump intakes and plumbing. The common pond snail is one of the worst on both counts. Nice to have, not a fix.
What are the steps to clear water?
- 1. Stop feeding until the water clears, or cut back to once or twice a week. Scoop out anything not eaten in 10 minutes. The average pond has plenty of natural food.
- 2. Check your fish load. More than one goldfish per 50 gallons, or one koi per 200 to 300 gallons? Thin the herd or upgrade your filter.
- 3. Clean out leaves, mulch, and debris. Decomposing debris is a constant nutrient drip feeding the algae. Net leaves before they sink.
- 4. Put the pump on the opposite side of the pond from the waterfall it feeds, so the whole pond circulates with no stagnant corners.
- 5. Add aquatic plants, especially submerged and floating varieties. Place floaters where water is continuously pulled past their roots.
- 6. Run a two-step filter system: a pre-filter at the pump, plus a properly sized biological filter (like the KISS Filter we offer) installed outside the pond, often hidden as a waterfall.
- 7. Seed weekly with beneficial bacteria like Hydro-Bugs or Green-be-Gone. Dry formulas are generally more economical than liquids.
- 8. Add a single layer of fist-sized round stone across the bottom and shelves so fish can't stir up settled dirt.
- 9. Keep run-off out. Raise the edges a few inches with stone and foam if needed so lawn run-off goes around the pond, not into it.
- 10. Do a 10 to 20 percent water change every two weeks. Purge from the bottom, and add dechlorinator if you refill with city water.
